Did you know, that you can optimise your application solution with the right light colour?!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen

In addition to the light geometry and the illumination angle, the wavelength plays a crucial role in selecting the right lighting. However, this point is often neglected. Yet, it is precisely this factor that can be decisive in solving your application.

In this newsletter, we will show you how you can optimise your application with little tricks and the right light colour.

TARGETED SELECTION OF THE WAVELENGTH FOR MAXIMUM CONTRAST WITH COLOURED OBJECTS

TARGETED SELECTION OF THE WAVELENGTH FOR MAXIMUM CONTRAST WITH COLOURED OBJECTS

  • Importance of wavelength selection:
Particularly crucial when working with colored objects and surfaces
  • Ideal combination with monochrome cameras:
The right light color significantly improves the efficiency of machine vision systems
  • Contrast increase without filter:
Increasing the image contrast in the test image – even without the use of optical or software filters
  • Principle of color reflection:
Objects reflect specific wavelengths that make them appear colored
Example: Red objects reflect red light; other wavelengths are absorbed
Graphic | Red spot lighting is reflected by a red object, blue and green parts of the light are absorbed
  • Lighting effect on the B/W image of the monochrome camera:
Red test part with red light = bright in the B/W image
Red test part without red component in the light = dark in the B/W image
  • Use of complementary contrast:
Strongest contrast effect when illuminated with a color complementary to the object color

    Examples:
Yellow object with blue lighting = black
Yellow object with red or green lighting = bright

APPLICATION AREAS IN PRACTICE

APPLICATION AREAS IN PRACTICE

There are various areas of application for colored lighting in industrial image processing. Here are some examples:

  • Optimised print image control in the packaging industry
  • Simplified assembly of colored plastic parts
  • Improving object recognition in pick & place tasks
